The 2023 Emmys date has been set for its postponed ceremony

It looks like a date has finally been set for the 2023 Emmys, following its postponement amid the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes. The Television Academy and Fox have announced that the 75th Emmy Awards will be held on Jan. 15 at LA Live's Peacock Theater, broadcast live on Fox from 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. This pushes the ceremony back almost four months from when it had initially been scheduled — the first time the Emmys have been postponed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will also be held at the same venue, taking place across Jan. 6 and 7.

ET / 5 p.m. PT. This pushes the ceremony back almost four months from when it had initially been scheduled — the first time the Emmys have been postponed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will also be held at the same venue, taking place across Jan. 6 and 7. FXX will subsequently air an edited version of the ceremony on Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT.

Though the Emmy Awards are going ahead, there are still a lot of questions concerning exactly how the ceremony will operate. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes show no sign of abating, meaning it could be a very poorly-attended event if their concerns aren't addressed by January.

Performers and writers are refusing to work until the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) agrees to grant them better pay, conditions, and compensation — work which includes promoting productions and attending events such as the Emmys. Over half of the Primetime Emmy Awards celebrate writers and actors, leaving only the series and directing awards.

Further, while the nominees in these categories may still choose to attend the Emmys, it wouldn't be surprising if some boycotted the event or declared support for the striking unions in their acceptance speech.

It doesn't seem as though the organisers are planning to just skip over the acting categories and hope nobody notices. Fox stated that the 75th Emmy Awards will celebrate "performers, writers, directors and craftspeople." But exactly how they'll do that without most of the honourees in attendance still remains to be seen.
