Claude, a generative AI chatbot created by Anthropic, just got a major new update.

The chatbot is one of ChatGPT's many competitors and is backed by both Google and Amazon. On Monday, the company announced that it is releasing a suite of AI models known as Claude 3. In an interview with Reuters, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called it "the Rolls-Royce of models."

"The family includes three state-of-the-art models in ascending order of capability: Claude 3 Haiku, Claude 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Opus," the company said in its announcement. "Each successive model offers increasingly powerful performance, allowing users to select the optimal balance of intelligence, speed, and cost for their specific application."

Haiku is described as "light and fast," Sonnet as "hard-working," and Opus as "powerful." According to CNBC, Anthropic's AI can respond to text, photos, charts, documents and other types of unstructured data, but it will only produce text responses because, the CEO told Reuters, "we've seen much less enterprise demand for [images]." Sonnet and Opus are currently available in 159 countries, while Haiku is not yet available.

This release comes just a few months after July's Claude 2 release and September's Claude Pro release, signaling what we all know to be true of the AI universe — it is only expanding.
